Sunday Summary: Intruder, Strawberries, and Rock Music

A summary of the previous week looks at the strawberry oil painting I did at the art group on Thursday, what music I listened to while painting and why there was no update on Tuesday

Weekly Summary: An Apology

Dear Readers, (eh up, have I gone all Bridgerton?)

In the UK we are at the time of writing in the midst of our Whitsun Bank Holiday weekend. For those of you reading that are currently in the middle of your weekend, I hope you are enjoying yourselves!

Many of you that read last Sunday’s Summary may be wondering what happened to the mid week technical rendition. Well, forgive me readers but that thing called ‘life’ threw me a hefty curve ball this week. Thing is, on Monday an unknown person to me tried several times to gain entry to my home through the patio doors despite them knowing I was here. The Police had to be called and it turned out to be someone who had absconded from the local psychiatric hospital. It was all a bit terrifying

Inevitably, the drams have led to a few sleepless nights, some anxiety, and well, you see, I ended up with a bit of a writers block. I hope you can all forgive the unforeseen temporary pause in publications but I very much hope to back to normal soon and bring you our first Technical Tuesday where I will go into more detail about how I complete some of my creative outputs.

Summer Strawberries

A small oil painting of some strawberries on piece of card.

Those of you that follow me on social media may have seen that I am part of an online art group ran by a local artist to me and friend , Matthew Allton.

The art group meet up regularly on line as we are from all over the UK, and even have a member based in Romania. The task was to complete a piece from a small selected on references. I chose strawberries, as had a few of us, and I entirely wish I had not. The small seeds, that I often over look when devouring half a punnet of the delicious red berries, haunted me as the painting progressed.

Even a loose, more expressive painter like my self, needs to pay some attention to detail and I could not ignore the several dozen of small seeds dotted all over the berries and how their existence effected the light shining on the berries. In the end I think I got bored, but the end result is still something of a nice painting. The bright colours certainly helped lift my mood and it was nice to talk to my arty friends about the earlier drama’s of the week. They are also great at encouraging me to step outside of my creative comfort zone.

For anyone interested in learning more about Matthew, he has a great YouTube channel where he does some demonstrations. You are also welcome to get in touch with him and ask more about the art group that he organises.

You can also check out my own short video of the strawberries painting below.

Music of the Week

As mentioned previously, this is not just an art blog. I do create classical music compositions. I also often will listen to music while I paint and as music is the emotional expression of experience compared to art which is more about the physical expression, they are symbiotic to me.

Although for most of the week I have reflected and felt, well, quite vulnerable and at times alone following the intrusion, It would have been counter productive to have probably listened to some dark classical music. Some genres of music can uplift the soul and for me, you just sometimes can’t beat a bit of pop or rock music to get you dancing about the house, get some energy going, and uplift that mood.

The artist of the week that I think embodies the best of rock and pop music is the great Tina Turner. She really did know how to do it all. This song is my particular favourite and will always get me moving. Who know’s when the rain clouds inevitably roll in this at some point this bank holiday weekend, it might even brighten your day too.

Get up and get moving to this corker of a tune!

Well that's it for today’s Sunday Summary. Join me mid week where I do a focused piece on Sunflowers and, introduce two guest artists who have shown me how to paint sunflowers properly!
